How to care for Reflective Dog collar patches and Bands - Bullrunflag

Important Information About Embroidered and Reflective Patches

At BullRunFlag, we are committed to providing the highest quality gear for your dog — built for durability, safety, and long-lasting performance.

If you’ve selected a custom embroidered patch or a 3M reflective patch or band, please take a moment to review these care instructions to get the most out of your collar.

Choosing the Right Customization for Your Needs

We proudly offer two premium customization options so you can match your dog’s lifestyle and needs:

Custom Embroidered Patches (maximum durability):

  • Made with high-strength thread and precision stitching.

  • Built to withstand extreme use, including working dogs, hunting dogs, and rugged outdoor activities.

  • Resists moisture, UV exposure, abrasion, and heavy wear without requiring special maintenance.

  • Available with hook-and-loop fasteners for removability or sewn directly onto the collar for ultimate strength.

If you prioritize maximum long-term durability with no ongoing maintenance, we recommend choosing embroidery.

3M Reflective Vinyl Patches and Reflective Bands (maximum nighttime visibility):

  • Designed for brilliant reflection under low-light and nighttime conditions.

  • Ideal for customers prioritizing safety and visibility during evening walks or outdoor adventures.

  • Reflective vinyl is naturally softer and more flexible than embroidery and requires occasional maintenance to preserve its brightness and flexibility.

How We Protect Your Reflective Gear

Before shipping, BullRunFlag applies two professional coats of a high-quality fabric water shield to all reflective patches and bands.

This pre-treatment creates a flexible waterproof barrier that helps defend against:

  • Moisture,

  • Dirt,

  • Cracking,

  • UV damage.

Your reflective materials are pre-protected when they arrive and should maintain strong performance for several weeks to months under normal conditions.

Why Reflective Materials Need Ongoing Care

Even with professional pre-treatment, reflective materials can naturally experience:

  • Minor cracking,

  • Surface flaking,

  • Gradual loss of reflectivity,

especially with outdoor exposure to rain, sun, mud, and movement.

This is normal for all reflective materials and is not considered a defect.

To maintain their optimal appearance and performance, periodic maintenance is recommended.

How to Maintain Your Reflective Patch or Band

  • Use a fabric water shield spray such as:

    • Scotchgard Fabric Water Shield (widely available at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Amazon),

    • Or a similar spray safe for synthetic materials and vinyl.

  • Reapply protection every month, or sooner after heavy exposure to rain, mud, or washing.

How to Apply Water Shield Properly:

  • If your patch is removable (hook-and-loop fastened):

    • Detach the patch from the collar before spraying.

    • Lay it flat on cardboard or newspaper.

    • Spray a light, even mist from 6–8 inches away.

    • Allow to dry fully before reattaching.

  • If your patch is sewn onto the collar, or you have a reflective band:

    • Insert a piece of cardboard or plastic behind the collar to protect the underlying material.

    • Lightly spray the reflective surface.

    • Allow it to dry completely before use.

Pro Tip for Spraying:

Always apply 2 light coats, rather than one heavy soaking.

  • Hold the spray can about 6–8 inches away from the surface.

  • Spray in a smooth, sweeping motion across the patch or band.

  • Allow the first coat to dry for at least 1 hour before applying the second coat.

  • Let the final spray fully cure for 24 hours before using the collar heavily.

Proper light spraying protects the vinyl without stiffening it and maintains the flexibility and reflectivity of your patch or band.

Summary

  • Embroidered patches offer maximum durability with no ongoing maintenance required.

  • Reflective patches and bands are pre-treated by BullRunFlag with two coats of waterproof protection.

  • For reflective products, occasional reapplication of water shield spray is recommended to extend life and maintain brightness.

  • Always hand wash and air dry collars to preserve quality.

By following these simple care tips, you can keep your dog’s collar looking sharp, performing safely, and lasting longer in real-world conditions.
